The researchers examined the wombat’s intestines and found that the upper part of the intestines was not square or solid, but soft liquid. However, Yang and his colleagues found that around the last 8% of the bowel leading to the anus, the poop was square and extremely dry. Wombat’s intestines increase pressure at the end, apply strong pressure to soft poop, and harden into a square shape, forming a cube of only 1 inch (about 2.54 cm) or less in size.
Yang believes the discovery will help shed light on the mysterious wombat life. Some researchers believe Wombat uses the square poop as a landmark for its territory, such as outside the hole he dug, on fallen trees and on rocks. Yang also believes that wombat’s square poop with a special intestine is based on the need to show his territory.
However, some researchers disagree with the theory, and Mike Swimbone, a University of Adelaide researcher at wombat, believes that liquid poop forms a square and dry shape at the end of the intestine to absorb valuable water into the body. For Wombat, who lives in a dry climate, discharging feces in a high-moisture state will create waste of water, although there is no clear answer to this question so far, further research is needed.
