The NBA’s popularity in China is so high that it is incomparably more enthusiastic than it was 20 years ago. AP reporter Tim Reynolds reports in detail.
Corby Bryant first visited China in 1998 when he held a basketball clinic in Beijing for about 12 children. The local coaches who participated together were not very familiar with basketball. Few even noticed that NBA players were coming into town.
Basketball was not popular in China. But in an instant everything changed.
Over the past 20 years or so, NBA popularity in China has grown rapidly, with a total of more than 500 million people watching NBA games last season. Under the new distribution contract, a huge sum of five years and 1.5 billion dollars will enter the league.
“When I first came here, I didn’t imagine basketball would become so popular in China,” Bryant says.
“But it actually became popular. And it never stops.”
The possibilities are endless. Although there is a movement problem, the NBA team was born in China. A two-way player contract that allows you to play across the NBA and the CBA (China Basketball League), or the NBA sends one team to China or one team from China to the U.S. to play for a season.
All of them may be unrealistic, but 20 years ago, no one imagined that the relationship between the NBA and China was this high. And after Yao Ming finished playing for the Houston Rockets eight years ago, no one expected him to continue to grow this much. The NBA already has an academy in China, and the Chinese national team is participating in the NBA Summer League held in Las Vegas.
“I think it’s a good question,” said Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors.
“The next step is probably when the next Yao Ming is born. So we reach a new level again, and more Chinese players join the NBA and start getting results.”
