This year’s Summer Olympics were held in Paris for the first time in 100 years. In competitions where players were worried about environmental and health burdens, such as the extreme heat, many topics focused on things outside the field emerged, and it was the inside of the athletes’ village that remained a not-so-small topic.

While all kinds of topics such as food and convenience were discussed, complaints were concentrated even before the opening of the village because of the indoor environment used by the players. The city of Paris and the organizing committee, which claimed to be the greenest competition in history, have adopted underfloor cooling using groundwater for each room’s cooling system. In addition, various ideas were put into the bedding, including the introduction of Airweave’s cardboard bed, which was put to practical use at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Above all, however, athletes who want a “comfortable environment” are complaining. Severe opinions were also gathered on the cardboard beds that had been adopted since the Tokyo Olympics.
Even after the tournament, there have been a series of opinions from the players that there were problems. The Arizona Republic, a U.S. daily newspaper, said, “There were still pros and cons of cardboard beds.” “Some people bought mattresses in the athletes’ village. I put up with it because it was troublesome to take it all the way back to my room, but it was really bad because it was hard,” said 18-year-old Jasmine Scofield, who was the Dominican women’s swimming representative.
However, there are not only negative opinions. Jamaican men’s national swimming team Josh Carlew said with a wry smile, “The bed is the bed.” “I can’t complain because I once slept on the floor at another competition,” he said.
However, the newspaper questioned the organizing committee’s decision to increase the burden on players by demanding that air conditioners bear the actual cost of air conditioning. “From the outset, officials at the Paris Olympics announced plans not to install air conditioners in the facilities to follow the theme of the event, “Green.” However, in addition to the stiff mattresses, the players are clearly disappointed that there is no air conditioning in the athletes’ village.”
