In the past, it was thought that red algae were the ones that produced this color. But according to a new paper published in the Journal of Glaciology, using radar to scan the ice layer, the real cause was discovered.
This discovery is National It was brought by a team of researchers, including Erin Pettitte, who is also a geographic emerging explorer.
Located in the McMurdo-Dry Valley of Antarctica, the blood waterfall flows down from Taylor Glacier, and its water gushes out from cracks running on the surface of the glacier. It has been considered a mystery why this water can flow. This is because the average temperature in the area is minus 17°C, and there is little melting on the surface of the glacier. (Reference: Is it true that Antarctic ice is increasing?)
Images scanned under the glacier provided a hint to solve this mystery. Underneath the glacier lies a complex network of rivers and lakes. The network is entirely filled with high iron salt water, which causes the waterfall to turn red.
The paper states that the reason why salt water flows without freezing can be explained by the nature of salt water. “In the glacier’s interior and underlying environment, salt water is kept liquid by combining the heat (submarine heat) generated when water turns into ice with a high salt content” (Reference: “Found a ‘boiling river’ on Amazon”)
